SDCC styling issues 2/2

My first post has generated several reactions, some agreed with me, others did not, looks like we don’t all have the same fashion sensibility after all, which spices things up a bit🙂 To return to some answers  I’ve made in the comments, of course, negative criticism contained in part 1 were written with all the admiration I have for Richard. But a little tough love doesn’t hurt, it’s nice to remember that he’s a man like any other – with his styling issues😀 – ! I understand that Richard has made efforts in the clothing department for the SDCC, and through Servetus I also learned that THE pair of jeans is Balmain’s biker, knowing that this haute couture house sells jeans for about  1500  € (!) Mr A has also made financial efforts. Luxury, rock, glamourous and trendy brand. Not really the words  I’d spontaneously associate with Richard, but why not ! But when with a quick Google search you realize that this pair of jeans is more easily worn by a  shrimp like Russell Brand, Zac Efron and Justin Bieber, they obviously do not have Richard’s build – and so much the better, I always prefer a man, a real one, rather than a boy – hence the fausse note. Now, on to the fun part.

Richard Armitage, being drop-dead gorgeous effortlessly at the airport.

These two pictures stir my inside. As stated in my interlude, they have an incredible effect on me, I feel that my mind is frozen, that my head is empty, unable to think. Add to this a beatific smile, this warmth in my chest and the characteristic tingling in the palms of my hands like every time I want someone… Suffice to say that I have a hard time staying focused. Let’s be brief, concise, effective!🙂 First thing I really like in these pictures is that they were taken by fans (and/or autograph hunters but whatever). This suggests that Richard, between two planes, is dressed as he is in his everyday life . He didn’t choose his clothes for a special occasion or a public appearance, but as he would have to go grocery shopping. He’s comfortable and relaxed in his clothes and it’s showing. The impression I get looking at him is that after getting up he took the first t-shirt and jeans he had on hand to dress. He exudes a raw energy, an ease  that I love.

Here we go from head to toe. Is it me or does his hair appear shorter ? Cut or styled ? Whatever the answer, the result is much cleaner and flattering. His haircut seems more styled, like his beard although there’s always the neck area problem. His face looks thinner and therefore less puffy. I didn’t specify in part 1 that I much prefer Richard with his natural color. I associate his black hair to his characters, but when I think of him, it’s always with brown hair. This warms his complexion. Moreover, it shows how good to him is New Zealand with a slight tan that suits him very well!🙂

I’ve read different opinions on his sunglasses, which made me smile. Yes, they look my grandfather’s, but I personally love them. The shape and color, very vintage, suit the shape of his face, so for me it’s an enthusiastic yes. It’s almost surprising to see him wearing this model because I’d rather picture him with Ray Ban for example, a timeless safe bet, as many pieces of his wardrobe. He still can surprise me and it’s a good thing ! Around his neck we find the mysterious necklace that teases us even more, and the watch, still beautiful. In the accessory category, another object more risky : the backpack, more functional than fashionable and very practical when traveling. For some people, this kind of bag is linked to teenagers, as  an Eastpak autographed with your pals’s artwork – am I the only one to have had one ? ^ ^. The backpack making a comeback since spring, especially in a baroudeur style as it’s the case here.

The too tight sweater curse…

Now, let’s talk about the outfit in itself. A gray loose T-shirt with short sleeves and round neck . Why does it work? Because the shirt is not fitting. Beyond 40 years old, a man must avoid too tight T-shirt that might accentuate minor flaws (love handles, emerging potbelly, etc). Of course, Richard’s body is flawless, but even he is not flattered by a too tight T-shirt  ( see the picture above  with Mr A coiled too ). The choice of the neck could have easily gone the wrong path since he has a rather wide neck, but as it’s wider than a classic round neck, once again, it works. The shirt fine material also brings added value. Unfortunately the pictures I have on hand do not allow me to judge the cut of the jeans, but I like very much what I see in the left picture, with sexy thighs  (when I think we’ve seen Richard in shorts in the last vlog ….). The dark color with a washout that seems natural is a very good choice. In the end,  we have a casual look, with discreet trendy details. Who would have thought ? Casual, yes, unkempt, no🙂.

Apart from all stylistic considerations, what touches me in these photos is that Richard is exactly as he is in my fantasies and dreams. I don’t know about you, but when I see the picture on the right, I want to run my fingers along his right arm…

Richard Armitage, being drop-dead gorgeous effortlessly at the airport.

The too tight sweater curse…

  1. I so very much enjoyed reading your analysis of these outfits. Like you, I much preferred the airport attire to the clothes he wore at SDCC. Not only did they fit his body better, but they didn’t make me think he was trying too hard–yes, that is the impression that the other outfit left me with. In these t-shirt and jeans pictures, he looks like a man who rolled out of bed and threw on his own comfy clothes. I can’t think of anything more appealing than that.

  2. 1500 for a pair of jeans? First make sure they fit in a flattering manner, don’t just buy them for the name. There is no need to be, as Madea puts it, a « label hoe ». Second, make sure the jeans are stain free.😉

  3. It’s the sunglasses that were the biggest shock for me! They seem very retro and a bit unisex. I would have thought Richard would cling on to the Porter style more. I wonder what brand they are. Not that it makes any difference, but they are probably very expensive, but I’m not sure they were worth the price😉 Now Aviator glasses. I would pay good money to see that!

    • I hate sunglasses. It is fine to protect your eyes in the bright sunlight, but don’t wear them in indoor settings like airports to hide behind. It is silly (it screams « I am a celebrity that doesn’t want to be recognized ») and it is impolite not to allow people to see your eyes. It always irritates me if I talk to people indoors that wear sunglasses.

      • LOL I adore how frank you are Jane! However, I have a friend with very sensitive eyes, so he struggles in places where there are many large windows, like airports. Having said that, we have no indication that RA also has sensitive eyes (he was filming SB in Africa, and there is behind the scene footage where he’s not wearing singlasses), so maybe it is a case of ‘hope no one sees me’. 🙂

      • The only excuse is if you wear a tinted version of the glasses you need to correct your eyesight outside and can’t simply take them off because then you couldn’t see anything. But even that makes a bad impression. When I’m on holiday, I’m constantly changing from sunglasses to my normal glasses when I enter a shop or something like that.

  4. When those pictures appeared the first time, a couple of weeks ago, they proverbially floored me. I downloaded them outrightly on my screen and the one, where he looks into the camera, welcomes me first of all ever since I get to my laptop and I ‘ll never tire of looking at it! Actually it repeatedly stirs pretty much the same feelings inside me as you’ve described them. Those two pics seem to be some of an absolutely rare specimen of pictures of a private Richard (in fact I can’t remember ever seeing another one) and therefore they have something quite „forbidden“ about them (ref. to all those dicussions in the fandom recently!!), or you can otherwise consider them incredible precious. Exciting. Yeah, that’s how we (at least some of us!) imagine him to be or how we dream and wish him to be, a nonetheless regular bloke whom we more likely can meet somewhere, out there……in our dreams. He looks extremely yummy, touchable and phenomenally sexy. (No black here!!!)
Besides, I love the shades he’s wearing. As we all know (!!), he looks good with different kind of glasses, but this pair is definitely not so much mainstream (vintage as you have called it) and a bit special. Maybe even a tad extravagant! It suits him very well and adds a hint of a serene coolness as a sideline. (Not that he needs any enhancements….😉 ).
BTW it wasn’t such a luxury expense: Those Balmain Jeans cost about 138,– NZDollar, which is approx. 90,– Euros or circa 110,– US$!! I remember reading that amount on Jonias Blog, when the link to the shop/the jeans was yet available. He still seems to be a modest approachable guy after all…

  6. Welcome back! I agree 100 percent with your clothing analysis. The SDCC outfit looked as though he had gotten dressed in the dark. I don’t care how trendy the jeans are–I absolutely hate them! The shirt buttoned just under his rib cage made him look heavy. Oddly enough, the SDCC hair actually was styled. I recall seeing a tweet that day from a stylist who had just worked with TH group. Not worth her weight in hair gel I say.
Now, the airport look was the stuff of dreams. I initially didn’t care for the glasses since I thought they were a bit fussy, but given how simple (but sexy) the rest of the look was, they worked. If running to the airport meant not really thinking about what to wear, I vote for « sleepy, just rolled out of bed and put on whatever » over « maybe I should try a bit since I’ll be in front of cameras » any day. I had the same reaction to what he wore for TH press conference (what the heck was printed on the back of that shirt???) versus what he wore at the Powhiri (oh, yummy!)

      • Thanks Professor for pointing out the brand. (How am I not surprised you would know that? LOL!) Stylish or not, it was a bit like a couture version of a mullet–business in front, party in the back–which would look cute on my 21 year old nephew but not on a 40 year old man. RA should stick with Prada, Belstaff and Burberry when opting for stylish labels. I think a style sense guided by the question « What would Gregory Peck/Carey Grant/(insert favorite classically male actor name here) wear if he were around today? » would best serve our distinguished RA.

  7. Servetus, I think you’re right about that. I guess he has to have one flaw! If questionable taste in wardrobe is the worst of his attributes, he’s well ahead of many of his peers.

    • I suppose he could dress in a different style, I just think of that interview in the spring of 2010 where the interviewer asked him if it wasn’t time to have a family and he responded that he feels about 25. I think his wardrobe of choice reflects that. You’re never too old to be young, right? I just would like him to choose jeans that fit attractively more consistently.

      • Agreed on the jeans. That’s where he should be thinking « what jeans would Gene Kelly wear? ». (IMHO, RA is the only actor whose bottom half rivals that man!)

      • I respectfully disagree, Northern gal. Why should RA dress like Cary Grant or Gene Kelly? It’s the 21st century..I hopehe’ll continue wearing whatever he’s comfortable with in the future and as long as the trousers don’t slide down his backside to reveal his underwear Justin Bieber-style, I’ll be content.🙂 I personally love that he’s not too bothered about clothes and doesn’t seem to spend half a day selecting his outfit and grooming himself.

      • I think I would like him less if he would care more about clothes. He would look better, but I wouldn’t like the mindset behind it. I adore that he’s a jeans and T-shirt guy most of the time and wears the wardrobe he has inherited from his characters, and I also adore the ill-fitting tux (the bow-tie with the plastic clip was so cute, as was taking off the bow-tie once the presenting was done) but I’m not even comfortable with the idea that he owns a few expensive designer clothes he actually bought himself.

  8. Judit- Sorry, but you will notice I said he should think about what those icons of male elegance would wear TODAY. I think the clothes from the Project Magazine shoot would meet that standard easily. George Clooney manages that look as does Tim Gunn. I never meant to imply he should look old fashioned- just elegantly fashionable. The airport t-shirt and jeans has that quality–simple, quietly trendy and appropriate to his body type and age. Maybe I am biased becaused I’m a resident of a large northeastern American city who is on the other side of 40, but I like my men to look like men, not trendy 20 something hipsters. Men are at their sexiest between 35 and 60. They need to work that and make it their own and leave the ultra trendy stuff to the pretty boys, IMHO.

    • I’m not asking Richard to turn into a stylished hipster actor, but rather to learn what suits him and what doesn’t. I think he can sports without too much effort a casual yet classy look, which is proven by the airport photo. Even though, like Jane, I find his fashion faux-pas kinda cute, he needs to pay more attention to his clothes, that’s part of his work. And he doesn’t have to wear trendy outfits to improve his style. Keep it simple🙂
